Colorfree Friday

To recap: We’re not allowed to wear color where I work, only black, white and grey.  Thus was born…Colorfree Fridays!  A celebration of all things colorless to remind us that limitations can also be inspiring.

So here’s what’s inspiring me this week!

This fabulous green one caught my eye.

I love the wooden button detailing!

It’s so cute, and those birds?  The puns practically write themselves ~

Holiday Shopping Guide

Merry Happy to all people celebrating all winter holidays!  So I assume you are desperately seeking ideas for the busy gift-giving season~  Here’s a little twisted inspiration for thoughtful gifts.  (You don’t want to end up looking like you just went to the gas station the day before, right?)

1) Spices:  Who doesn’t love exotic spices?  A huge container of Garam Masala, Old Bay, Lemon-Lime Thyme; these are even better when they come in an awesome little box, jar or package!  This present is also super-sweet if you include a few of your favorite recipes written out to go with the gift~

2) Edible Holiday Ornaments(look beyond the candy canes):  These come in a few different varieties, but are usually either hollow balls of chocolate or cookie type things with a shiny string to hang them on a tree/mantel/menorah~  Bonus points if you make them yourself! (freeze until giving if you need to make them ahead of time)

3)Gloves:  Who doesn’t need a nice warm pair of gloves!  Everyone everywhere loses them, so it’s always a useful present.  And there’s so much variety: mittens, shearling, lined, leather, fleece; something is sure to please!

4)Books:  Pick one classic favorite that you love and share with someone new.  The Robert Sabuda pop-up books double as presents and decorations, especially Winter’s Tale (which I love, love, love!)

5)Art:  Support your local artists, try shopping at an independant gallery for a small print, set of cards, handmade scarf, or tiny sculpture.  Your giftee will have nothing else like it!  (Warning, this option is not for the faint of heart, or, er, taste-impaired. You know who you are.  Just stay away from anything that looks like it belongs on Regretsy)

Wardrobe Evaluation: Scarves

This is the last post of October Wardrobe Evaluation!  TL:DR – I spent a month analyzing my closet piece by piece and deciding what to keep and what to give away.

And this last bit is the hardest.  I love my scarves, yo.  Which is why I have, no lie, 3 dozen of them.  Which is really too many, all things considered.  I don’t have the space to even see them all!  So, much as it pains me, I must weed.

Here’s the thing; I didn’t buy all these scarves.  About half of them were presents, because everybody knows twistedchic loves scarves!  It’s an easy present.  And I love the thought!  But a lot of the scarves that were given to me are polyester, or scratchy or otherwise… not so great.  They may be beautiful, but polyester won’t keep you warm, and nothing scratchy is worth wearing, no matter how pretty.  So I’m donating about 6 gift scarves.  Also getting donated are a few near duplicate scarves, things that are very similar to ones I already have, but don’t like as well.  After donation, I’ll be about 10 scarves lighter.  Also, I’m going to find a better way to display the scarves I do have, hanging off the closet isn’t really ideal…

Yay, the Wardrobe Evaluation is done!  This was a huge project and I’m really proud of myself that I got it all done.  Next month: new aquisitions! ~

A Tough Month: Funerals and Wakes

This has been a tough month in Chicagoland.  My good friend LL recently lost her mother, and my friend KK’s aunt in law also passed away.  My condolences go out to both of my friends.

But my friend KK asked me for some advice, and I’m reposting it here, because I know this is something we’ve all gone through.  (I remember frantically shopping for something to wear to a funeral, and that’s awful, because you can’t really think and don’t know what to get, and you’re just not in a good place.  Last minute funeral shopping is not a good thing.  So go and do this ahead of time.  Not that I want anyone to have to attend a funeral, but you never know.)

So here’s the thing; KK needs something to wear to the wake, and she literally has nothing to wear.  KK doesn’t wear black very often, and hates dresses.  Howeve,  funerals and wakes have a very specific dress code.  And my friend, who is on a tight budget, doesn’t want to spend money on something she won’t wear very much.  Which is perfectly understandable.  So, to help her out, I came up with a list of things which are wake-appropriate, but can also work in a normal wardrobe.

Black Dress Chinos: spend the money and buy yourself a pair of heavy duty black chinos, fitted or straight leg.  I have two pairs of black Gap chinos (so soft! and comfy), and I wear those all the time.  Dress them up, dress them down; these will be workhorses of your closet, as well as emergency funeral wear.

Charcoal Dress Shirt: this isn’t black, so you don’t have to worry about your blacks matching.  Buy it in a supersoft material; something you will love feeling on your skin, and you will wear it all the time.

Lightweight neutral sweater or cardigan: doesn’t have to be black or grey, could be oatmeal, beige, off white, whatever, as long as it doesn’t have a graphic pattern or print.  But do yourself a favor and buy cashmere or a silk blend.  It’s warmer and softer, and believe me comfort and warmth are what you are needing during a funeral or wake.

Cotton Canvas Jacket: this has enough structure to be dressy, but isn’t as fussy as a traditional blazer. Again, doesn’t need to be black, but some dark neutral color.   Something like these two options:

All of these pieces are alternatives to the traditional black dress and blazer combo; they are funeral appropriate, yet still very everyday wearable.

So hopefully this is some helpful advice for your real life.  Also?  Try googling “funeral clothing” or “what to wear to a wake.”  Everyone in the pictures lookes happy and is smiling. WTF Google?!

Lipstick is troublesome for me.  I love color, but hate the taste; and most lipsticks taste awful!  There are tasty, sugary options for lipgloss, but they don’t have as much COLOR as lipstick.

I finally decided that I simply had to have a good lipstick that I could wear.  So I wandered on over to Sephora, and proceded to try on literally every lipstick in the store.  (the salespeople were very nice about it)  They suggested Tarte, Kat VonD, Smashbox; but I’d put it on, lick my lips, and go blech!

But there is a happy ending: Korres Mango Butter Lipstick in Plum.  It was the only one that didn’t taste like chemical goo.  And believe me, I tried them all!  FYI  you try on every lip product in the store; don’t be surprised when your lips are a little sore and sensative after…

So the verdict is in: Korres MB Plum is my new favorite (and only) lipstick.

Old Navy Dress: DIY 3 Ways, Part III

The fabric of the original Old Navy Dress is mostly gone now, only the top and one sleeve remains.  So for this project, we will take our remaining fabric and pair it with parts from another shirt.  Just like Frankenstein!  But less creepy.  Science!

Here’s the other top, a generic blue baby doll I picked up at Goodwill:

I first cut the top away, which I wouldn’t need, then pinned it to the print fabric.

The main problem I had with this part of the project was that the printed top piece was larger than the navy bottom bit.  So I snipped out some fabric, and put tuck pleats into the top (to accomodate the natural curve of the bust) as I sewed it on.  Here are a few key things I would suggest if anyone else wants to try this:

Keep in mind which seams are innies, and which are outties.  Don’t confuse these two!

Put your pins in sideways, it’s easier to pull them out as you go along that way.

When working with a stretch fabric, use a stretch stitch!

Fabric tends to shrink in the wash, so wash before you sew.

And voila!  A lovely lightweight top.  I left the sleeve seams raw, ’cause that’s how I roll!

August is a third of the way done, but it’s not too late to be inspired!  This month is all about texture, which is a really underrated element of style, in my opinion…

Images from the Art of Animation, A Beautiful Mess, Sea of Shoes, and I know you just saw those earrings, I don’t care I love them sooo much!
