Return to the Windy (Snowy) City

So I’m finally a) back from visiting my wonderful family in Texas and b) over the terrible airport-flu I caught.   (I’ll spare you the horrible travel details, suffice it to say that my flying experience was everything you could dread and then some~)

However, it was all worth it because … I brought magnificent stuff back with me from lovely (mostly) sunny Texas:

My new belt~

I searched all over for a belt like this last year and the year before, only to have everything be sold out!  So how lucky was I to find it in an antique store outside of Austin?  Pretty darn lucky~

My awesome brother got me this fan for christmas.  It’s gorgeous!

I’m going to have to figure out how to display it properly (more on that later) but it was the cutest present~

‘Tis the season!  I’ve got most of my holiday shopping done, so I’m passing along the inspiration in case anybody else needs some.  Here are some great presents for anyone in your life.

These slippers are incredibly comfy!  I’ve got a pair myself and I love them~

These geode earrings are unique and gorgeous!

These winter hats say women, but I think they’d be great for anyone, and so warm! (I live in Chicagoland, so that’s key)

Or how about this cool wallet?  Very organized, and I guarantee they won’t have one like it~

Of course, there’s nothing like a home-made gift.  I’m giving a couple of fleece scarves out this year (shhhhh, don’t tell!) That post to come!

A Splash of Color

Some fashion forecasters have come up with a list of up-and-coming colors for 2013, all helpfully charted out on the Pantone color scale~

P2colors

So we’re halfway through the year, still it’s never too late to infuse a little color into your wardrobe, household or lifestyle~  Try a little mix and match, many of the colors above would look fabulous paired up!

This cardigan has a little bit of Linen, Nectarine and Poppy Red:

And some nice asymmetrical earrings in Monaco Blue:

Something I really want is a maxi dress, here’s a beautifully draped one in dusk blue:

And you can never have too many tee’s so here’s my favorite Gap pocket version in African Violet (and it’s on sale!):

So go out and enjoy your colors!

7 Pieces, 7 Outfits

I have too many clothes, yo.  It’s a problem.  Sadly, the real problem is I’m not smarter than my closet~

I’m tired of combing through my closet, pulling out tees and muttering “this shirt is problematic.”  So I’ve decided to try GCOGH’s 7×7 challenge.  Yes, I’m making seven different outfits with only 7 pieces, including shoes.  (These are obvs. casual outfits, as my work outfits are color-free, see previous posts for details~)  I got inspired by Putting Me Together, who is sweet and funny (and you should give her blog a read~)

The Lineup…

1. Anthropologie Cargo Vest (Originally a jacket) 2. Lululemon Embroidered Skirt 3. Green Loft Cardi 4. Target Marily Tee 5. Anthropologie Grey Skinny Jeans 6. Basic Black Ballet Flats 7. Old Navy White Button Up

To keep things interesting, you can add the accessories of your choice.  So I threw on my scarves, made a bracelet, pulled out an old necklace, and my carved turquoise ring; generally mixed it up a bit…

I was surprised by how versatile the Lululemon skirt was; I’d really had trouble figuring out what to wear with it in the past.  I also had a lot of  fun with the cargo vest (which is my newest clothing purchase), this was really a great completer piece.  It’s also very practical because whenever I go hiking I’m always lamenting my lack of pockets.  Problem solved!

I’m stuck at home, recovering from dentistry.  I really deserve a reward for sucking it up and going through all of that, so here’s my top 5 spring wishlist wants.  Hmmm, which should I get?

This embroidered tunic?

Changing Seasons

Transitions have really been on my mind, lately.

It’s been a full month since I’ve posted last, and the seasons have finally gone from winter to spring.  I’ve packed away the parka, and pulled out the raincoats.  Just in time, it’s been pouring for two days.

It’s also been a season of funerals, I and several of my friends have had loved ones pass.  So condolences and my thoughts are with all those who have lost family today.

With all that in mind, here is what’s inspiring me for April

I love this sweater, I have one just like it that I picked up at the Goodwill near where I work.  It’s absolutely my go-to sweater, I wear it every week!  I really love the soft comfort of the sweater paired with the color/texture and formality of the skirt and heels.  Really lovely.

Cold Weather Inspiration

Despite the cold weather, I still want to show off my style.  Unfortunately, some days the only style you see is the ubiquitous big black puffer coat, and wet snow boots.  But there are options, for the more aesthetically minded!  (Just remember to layer, and have an insulated coat~)

Here are some of my winter weather inspirations:

Chilly, yet classy!  Look at that ice; hope she’s got spikes on those boots~

And that’s layering done right!  I’m in love with the cravat~ AND THE FINGERLESS MITTENS!

Warm hats cannot be underrated when planning a cold weather outfit.  Also, I used to own that exact same coat…and it was awesome!

Winterwear doesn’t have to be boring!  Shake it up.  Shake it, shake it, shake it, girl, make sure you don’t break it girl~ (No really, don’t break it, those sidewalks are covered in ice so be careful)

You all know how much I love stars!  Star prints, star designs, star jewelry; it’s kind of my thing!  So here’s what I’m drooling over right now: some January star love~

This star print top for starters

Which I could totally wear with these jeans!

Black & White: Now with added hilarity!

I was recounting the hilarity that is my new workplace dress code to my brother (and maybe griping, just a little~); he responded that at least I don’t have his dress code.  Turns out military boots are really uncomfortable, and will “do a job on your feet after twenty years.”  Good point.  Hmmm, guess I should count my blessings!  (This is why I love my brother, he really has a way of putting stuff into perspective)

So here’s what’s inspiring me on the black/white front!

Not that I could wear this to work, but I do love the beading details and the clean lines~

This pic is all about the shoes (the sartorialist)

I could aaaaaalmost make this work at work…

SPIKE BACKED BOOTS!

(Oh, god, the puns almost write themselves)  Crazy, yes, BUT AWESOME!  Also probably more comfortable than my brother’s boots…~

Wardrobe Overhaul: Shoes

Ooooh, shoes.  These are one of the biggest problems in my wardrobe, a real struggle for me.  Here’s what I have: 2 pair of workout shoes, one pair of punk boots, one pair of winter boots, one pair of riding boots that doesn’t fit, a pair of sandals, and some uncomfortable dock shoes.

It’s a real challenge, finding shoes that work for me, and are comfortable.  Which is why I end up wearing either the punk boots or the workout shoes all the time.  I know this is the area of my wardrobe which is lacking, so I’m going to do some actual shopping! (as opposed to fake shopping.  You know.  On the internet.)

First step: ditch the stuff that ~really~ doesn’t work.  The boots that don’t fit and the uncomfortable dockers.  That’s the easy part.  The hard part is step two: what do I really need?

I need a pair of boots that do fit: maybe some cowboy boots?

Also, a pair of dressy flats and a pair of casual walking shoes.  Minimum.  Time to start shoppin’: out with the old and in with the new.  And the best thing about living in Chicagoland is – there’s plenty of shopping.  Maybe I’ll take that trip to Fluevog’s I’ve been wanting to do!

Behold the awesome Fluevog!
