This winter’s been a season of storms here in Chicagoland.  Thank goodness it’ll be over soon.  Right?! Soon???

So my favorite things of winter?  Lots of warm~

1. Land’s End Coat:  Let’s face it, you need a puffer coat up here, frostbite is not a good look for anyone.  But it’s nice to have on that’s not the ubiquitous black that I see on everyone else~

2. Born Boots: These I got years ago, they’re lined in flannel and so warm!

3. Gold Owl Earrings: I inherited these from my grandmother.  Adorable gold owl studs~

4. My crockpot and this recipe~

5. Cozy foxy flannel pajamas.  (No idea where these came from, they were a gift.) Toasty warm!

Well, it’s cold and the snow is just around the corner here in Chicagoland; you’d think it was winter or something~!  So I’m celebrating all my favorite things of winter, my cold weather must-haves.

Clothes:  Sonoma thermal tee in grey paisley: holy crap this thing is warm and soft~  Unfortunately, this isn’t available  in an x-small, and the small is just swimming on me, so I had to take it in.  Worth it!  I bought it in another color,  that’s how much I love it~

Tiny pic is tiny~

Food:  Garam Masala Spice, I have been making this recipe non-stop (but with chicken), it’s great with naan (or latkes~)

Accessories:  Blue Sodalite Ring: this was a gift from my Momma!  I love how simple and sleek the design is, nothing to catch on, I can even wear it to work.

The cobalt blue of the sodalite is stunning IRL

Music: Red Ribbon Foxes and Winter Song these are the only holiday songs I ~want~ to listen to right now (I’m a little done with all the in-store holiday musak)

Holiday Shopping Guide

Merry Happy to all people celebrating all winter holidays!  So I assume you are desperately seeking ideas for the busy gift-giving season~  Here’s a little twisted inspiration for thoughtful gifts.  (You don’t want to end up looking like you just went to the gas station the day before, right?)

1) Spices:  Who doesn’t love exotic spices?  A huge container of Garam Masala, Old Bay, Lemon-Lime Thyme; these are even better when they come in an awesome little box, jar or package!  This present is also super-sweet if you include a few of your favorite recipes written out to go with the gift~

2) Edible Holiday Ornaments(look beyond the candy canes):  These come in a few different varieties, but are usually either hollow balls of chocolate or cookie type things with a shiny string to hang them on a tree/mantel/menorah~  Bonus points if you make them yourself! (freeze until giving if you need to make them ahead of time)

3)Gloves:  Who doesn’t need a nice warm pair of gloves!  Everyone everywhere loses them, so it’s always a useful present.  And there’s so much variety: mittens, shearling, lined, leather, fleece; something is sure to please!

4)Books:  Pick one classic favorite that you love and share with someone new.  The Robert Sabuda pop-up books double as presents and decorations, especially Winter’s Tale (which I love, love, love!)

5)Art:  Support your local artists, try shopping at an independant gallery for a small print, set of cards, handmade scarf, or tiny sculpture.  Your giftee will have nothing else like it!  (Warning, this option is not for the faint of heart, or, er, taste-impaired. You know who you are.  Just stay away from anything that looks like it belongs on Regretsy)

DIY Monday:Polka Dot Fever!

We’ve all had it happen.  You buy a cute top, skirt, whatever.  Then you get it home, and realize it was not quite the color you thought it was.  The pretty tank top with delicate purple polka dots starts to look a little more…fuschia.  In fact, it’s very clear that your new Gap tank has a bad case of the measles!~  Or that’s what it looked like to me.

This is a problem.  Contagion chic is not the look for me!

I can fix this, thought I.  Fabric paint, to the rescue!  I took my tank and stretched it out on piece of cardboard.  This gives it stability so the paint doesn’t rub off on another section while it dries.

I then used Navy fabric paint and a small brush to alter the color of about 1/3rd of the dots.  All of them would have been over-doing it, but this way, it looks fun and intentional.  And kinda like Dippin’ Dots!

Dippin’ Dots are a fashion statement I can get behind!

I love this new look so much, I may get another color and paint in more!

It’s so hot in Chicagoland, you’d think it was summer or something!  It’s so hot, I’m too lazy to try anything new or fun today, so I’m just relying on my tried-and-true staples: the favorite things of summer.  My favorite things tend to fluctuate based on the weather, so here are this season’s miss congenialities of the closet…

Jewelry: my new beaded earrings from Chicago Bead Company:

These glass beads have three little stripes, gold, black and a delicate green

Clothing: Old Navy striped shorts that I got on sale for $3! and my Kohl’s explosion of summer tee.

Food: Almond Milk Pancakes and Mexican Rice with Enchilada Sauce

Song: Allison Krauss “Jacob’s Dream”  (Warning, this song is so sad, you will cry like a little girl I’m not even kidding)
